What to Expect for NFL Free Agency

By: Steven Tauro February 27, 2020

Twenty years ago, it would have been hard to predict that Tom Brady would be in the discussion as the greatest QB of all time. Now the discussion about the future Hall of Famer is a bit different. Heading into his 21st season, at 43 years old, Tom Brady is now a free agent.

Along with Tom, there are many other players around the league who have been idolized for years but are now free agents. In this article we will discuss some possible landing sports for some of the biggest names in the sport.

Tom Brady QB Patriots – This is the closest we have been to a Brady departure. Tom’s likely destinations are the Chargers and Titans, but I do not see the GOAT in a different jersey in 2020.

Dak Prescott QB Cowboys – Dak has bet on himself year in and year out and it has paid off. The Cowboys need to find a way to get him back on the team in 2020, Dak will be a Cowboy.

Jadeveon Clowney OLB Seahawks – One of the most impactful defensive players in the game is about to get the bag! Clowney was traded from Houston to Seattle and made an agreement to not be franchise tagged at the conclusion of the 2019 season. Jadeveon is being viewed as the top defensive free agent and could fit with a lot of teams. I could see the Seahawks signing an extension before free agency arrives in March, but look out for teams like the Giants, Colts, and Bills.

Byron Jones CB Cowboys – Versatility is so important for defensive backs and this is one of the most versatile at the position. Jones can cover at any corner position and play safety just as well. I believe Jones stays in the NFC East and will end up with the Eagles or the Redskins.

Yannick Ngakoue DE Jaguars – While getting tagged is out of the players control, Ngakoue is trying to get paid handsomely. At 25 years old Yannick has played some great ball with a lot left in the tank. The NY Giants, NY Jets, and the Panthers could all target one of the best defensive players in free agency but staying put in Florida is likely.

Phillip Rivers QB Chargers – The Chargers have made it clear that they are choosing to go in a different direction at the QB position. Rivers still has a couple years left in the tank and I see Tampa Bay as the perfect fit, but with Winston still in the picture, the Colts are the likely option.

Austin Hooper TE Falcons – Austin Hooper performed in a contract year and the Falcons are not hitting him with the tag. Expect a couple of AFC East teams to be significantly interested, NE Patriots and NY Jets, but Hooper is also drawing interest from Packers, Bears, and Redskins.

A.J. Green WR Bengals – With injury history and age as big factors for A.J., this free agency period is important. The Bengals may view Green as a leader, but if Green was going to be a Bengal an extension would have likely happened by now. While being tagged is still an option, the former Bengals WR has torched the division for years and I think that continues to be the case as the Ravensmake a big push for Green.

Likely Franchise or Transition Tag Candidates: Arik Armstead DE 49ers, Matthew JudonOLB Ravens, Derrick Henry HB Titans, Justin Simmons S Broncos, Chris Jones DE Chiefs, Brandon Scherff OG Redskins
